Romans 12:2
"Do not conform to the ways of the world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…"
I recently realized the importance of keeping our minds filled with the words of Christ and honoring Him. Do I still listen to some secular music? Watch secular TV shows? Yes, I do! But through these experiences, I noticed a shift in my thoughts, emotions, and actions compared to when I filled my mind with God’s Word and worship music.
This was especially true when I began comparing myself to others and believing the lies of the enemy. As it says in 2 Corinthians 10:5:
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
These moments taught me the importance of constantly consuming Christian media and being discerning about secular content. I’m not saying you can’t engage with secular content at all, but as Christians, it’s crucial to be mindful of what and how much we consume. Filling your mind with faith-based content helps create a foundation for spiritual growth and peace, even in a chaotic world.
Why What You Consume Matters
As I said, I do watch secular television. Recently, I rewatched shows I loved in the past, like Gossip Girl. Watching this show again as a Christian with open eyes, I realized the dark hold it had over me when I was younger and how it influenced my thoughts and emotions. Once again, those self-deprecating voices crept in, and I noticed depression and anxiety lingering. It’s easy to get swept up in the glamorized chaos, but the lasting impact can be harmful.
What we consume is immensely important. The shows we watch and the music we listen to—all shape our thoughts, feelings, and actions, often more than we realize. For example, I remember a time when a derogatory song was played at a social event. Everyone embraced the message and laughed about their personal experiences. I felt deeply uncomfortable and left.
Even video games can have an impact—notice how violent games can leave players angry or frustrated. Everything we consume carries a spirit, and we must choose wisely. When we let in darkness, it can cloud our hearts and minds. But when we focus on light, we reflect God’s love and grace. As Proverbs 4:23 says:
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Secular media often glorifies values and lifestyles that are far from God’s teachings, making it even more important to remain vigilant about what we allow into our lives. Replacing toxic content with Christ-centered content transforms our perspective and clarifies our walk with Him.
Benefits of Consuming Christian Media
Consuming Christian content offers numerous benefits, but it’s important not to overconsume in areas that might create unhealthy focus. For instance, if you’re single, you might be tempted to endlessly watch content about God sending a spouse. This can inadvertently shift your focus from God to idolizing the idea of a relationship.
The true goal of consuming Christian media is to keep our minds aligned with God and free from the fear, anxiety, and negativity that worldly media often promotes. We’re in a spiritual battle, and there’s a constant fight for our attention. How often do we scroll social media to escape life’s stresses, only to feel worse afterward? Compare that to the peace and encouragement we find in Scripture.
Christian media serves as a reminder of God’s love, promises, and guidance. It helps us shift our focus from fleeting worldly concerns to eternal truths. As we tune our hearts to His Word, we build a stronger relationship with Him and find the strength to resist the enemy’s schemes.
1 Peter 5:8 reminds us:
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
The Many Ways to Absorb Christian Media
Here are practical ways to fill your life with uplifting, God-honoring content:
Worship Music: Worship music isn’t just for church! Create a playlist on Spotify or Apple Music and listen while doing everyday tasks like laundry, cleaning, or cooking. Music has a profound effect on our emotions and spirit, and worship music draws us closer to God.
Social Media Algorithms: If scrolling drains you, start engaging with Christian creators to train the algorithm to show more faith-based content. Social media doesn’t have to be chaotic; when used wisely, it can be a source of encouragement and connection.
Christian Apps: Try apps like YouVersion or Dwell to listen to the Bible if you don’t yet have a physical copy. (One should always have a physical bible).
Daily Bible Reading: Set reminders to spend time in God’s Word. It’s important to prioritize time with the Lord because when He’s first, everything else falls into place. Start with a devotional or read one chapter a day to build consistency.
Avoid Negative Media: I avoid the news and instead turn to the Bible especially when feeling heavy burdened. God’s Word isn’t just a collection of old stories; it’s alive and relevant today. As Psalm 119:105 says:
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."Engage with Christian Communities: Surround yourself with others who share your faith. Whether through online communities, Bible studies, or church groups, having support strengthens your walk with Christ.
I Invite You To Reflect and Act
Take your thoughts captive and pay attention to how certain content affects your emotions. Pray to the Lord for discernment and let Him fill you with His wisdom. I challenge you to reflect on your current habits for the next seven days. How much secular content are you consuming versus Christian content? Journal your observations and see how your mindset shifts when you focus on God’s Word.
Replacing secular media doesn’t have to feel restrictive—it’s an opportunity to discover uplifting and inspiring alternatives that glorify God. Over time, you’ll notice a transformation in your heart, mind, and spirit as you let Christ take the lead. Remember, the Lord is within you and will guide you every step of the way.
God Bless,
